The Society of Friends (or 'Quakers') was formed by George Fox (1624-1691), a shoemaker from Nottingham. In the 1640s Fox travelled throughout England delivering sermons in which he argued that individuals could have direct access to God without the need for churches, priests or other aspects of the established Church. A circular sent out in November 1874 to members of York Preparative Meeting resulted in the creation of a Friends Temperance Association in the city. It began with 120 members and by 1880, had 200 Friends on its books. Its first secretary was Fielden Thorp. The association held annual public meetings and several of its members ran Bands of Hope for the children of Friends. It was still active in 1880.
